The name pretty much sums up the business: This guy, Steve Gadlin, hand draws pictures of cats (fat, small, wearing hats, tap-dancing, etc), posts them online, and then sells them to people all over the world.

He came up with this idea just for fun. But what started as a hobby, quickly turned into a real business with real revenues, almost overnight.

Results: drawing cats = getting paid
He sold more than 18,794 of these simple drawings in 5 years, before closing the site down to start other wacky businesses .

Just before he closed up shop, his cat drawing were selling for as much $29.50 each. Turns out, those “silly” drawings generated some pretty serious revenues with hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales.

He also managed to get a $25,000 investment out of billionaire Mark Cuban on “Shark Tank”, using this song-and-dance sales pitch:

All that from taking his vague idea for a fun business and seeing if anyone would pay him for it.

The takeaway: You can use the skills you already have (as weird as they may be) to start a new business.

Here’s a test that guarantees people will pay you for your idea:

It’s easy to sit around, come up with ideas, and imagine how much money we’re going to make. But if you want to make your dream a reality, you need to test it. Just one test can save you months or years of effort going down the wrong path.

Here’s how to test an idea in under 20 minutes to see if it’s worth pursuing:

  • Find 1 person — JUST ONE! — who might be interested in your idea. You can reach out to this person via email or meet them face-to-face. If you’re not sure who’d be interested, ask ANYONE remotely close to the idea, even if it’s your parents. You’re not aiming for perfection right now, just people.
  • “Test” for language using this script: “I’m thinking of starting some kind of website around [YOUR IDEA]. What’s the biggest problem around [YOUR IDEA]?”
  • Write down the exact language they use. Did they really say, “I want a solution that’s easy, fast, and secure”? No, they did not. WRITE DOWN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SAY. “I hate how these jeans look on me” is a terrific response. Why? Because when you create your product/solutions for this need in the market, you need to consider what people actually want. NOT what you think they want, but what they actually say they need.

This exercise will help you determine what they would be willing to pay for. Who knows, you might be a dog-drawing superstar? But you have to test it to find out.

    Business Analyst Salary What Are the Financial Benefits of Being a Business Analyst?

    Are you wondering if your business analysis career goals make sense financially? Considering switching careers and wondering if you ll take a short-term salary hit? Simply looking to find out what salary a business analyst makes?

    The most recent salary survey of practicing business analysts was conducted by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) in 2013. While the detailed report is available to IIBA members only, I obtained permission to share a few relevant details with our readers.

    The report summarizes data from 2,085 responses representing 62 countries. Overall, the findings are positive for those considering a career in business analysis.

    Finding #1: The Business Analyst Salary Outpaces Other Professions

    In the US, the average business analyst salary is $91,512. This number rose significantly since the $82,493 average salary reported in 2010, and is more than double the median household income.

    The report summarized salary figures from five other countries in US dollars:

    • Average Business Analyst Salary in Australia: $111,949
    • Average Business Analyst Salary in Canada: $88,985
    • Average Business Analyst Salary in India: $18,086
    • Average Business Analyst Salary in South Africa: $57,893
    • Average Business Analyst Salary in the United Kingdom: $88,745

    Finding #2: More BA Experience = Higher Salary

    Across the board, the average business analyst salary increased with years of professional experience. Education did not have a significant impact on salary and in some countries had no impact.

    This finding was consistent with the 2010 report. In fact, the 2010 report was more specific and indicated that each year of paid business analysis experience, salary rose by $923. (In contrast, for each year of paid software development experience, salaries only rose by $220.)

    The good news for you is that even if you ve never held a titled business analyst job, you may have qualifying business analysis experience. While it s not a direct output of the report, investing the time in discovering your transferable skills and experiences could make a significant difference in your starting salary in your first or next formal business analyst position.

    Finding #3: Business Analyst Salaries Diverged Significantly by Industry

    In all countries, salaries diverged across industry. For example, in the United States, the lowest paying industry averaged salaries at $81,741 and the highest paying industry averaged salaries at $109,288 .

    If you are considering focusing on a specific industry in your business analysis career, the report can help you make a wise financial decision. While exceptions always exist to every average, your choice of industry could have a significant impact on your long-term salary potential as a business analyst.

    Bipolar Women Have Special Pregnancy Concerns

    This potential for significant mental health problems and early mothering challenges indicates the importance of properly identifying the disorder and developing specific treatments for women during and after pregnancy.

    The topic is discussed in a current study found in the Journal of Affective Disorders .

    “Similar to what you find with bipolar disorder in the nonperinatal population, the overall level of clinical severity and functional impairment really stands out as being of concern,” said Dr. Cynthia Battle, associate professor (research) of psychiatry and human behavior in the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

    “It’s a highly vulnerable time for these women,” said Battle, who is also a psychologist at Butler Hospital and Women Infants Hospital.

    “They have increased functional demands at this time.”

    Pregnancy often disrupts sleep and parenting a newborn can involve getting up several times a night for months, for example. Such sleep problems can potentially trigger new mood episodes among women with bipolar disorder, Battle said.

    Also, some women go off their medicines while pregnant out of concern for the health of the fetus, leaving their condition untreated.

    To determine the clinical consequences of experiencing an acute disorder at a tricky time, Battle and her co-authors examined the records of 334 women diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and seeking treatment at the Women Infants Day Hospital Program, a perinatal-focused partial hospitalization program.

    Among the women, 32 were diagnosed with type I, type II, or unspecified bipolar disorder. All other patients were diagnosed with different psychiatric disorders, such as major depression. generalized anxiety. PTSD. or obsessive compulsive disorder.

    Battle and her co-authors then conducted a statistical analysis of the records to compare how often the patients with bipolar disorder experienced important psychiatric and maternal problems, compared to women with the other disorders.

    “Among those women who were diagnosed with BD, there was a significantly heightened risk for self-harm and impairment,” the authors wrote.

    Specifically, more than half of bipolar women had a history of substance abuse, compared to 26 percent of other patients, and 59 percent had a history of suicide attempts compared to 27 percent of other patients.

    They also found that more than half of women with bipolar disorder had complications delivering their babies, compared to 27 percent of other patients.

    While a similar percentage of women with BD breastfed their infants, a larger proportion of the women with BD (78 percent) reported having trouble with breastfeeding, compared to 42.3 percent of other patients.

    Then comes the issue of whether a mother is experiencing post-partum depression or is it bipolar?

    Because of the serious clinical consequences associated with bipolar disorder, Battle said, providers need to watch carefully for mania symptoms of elation or irritability that distinguish bipolar disorder from depression.

    “Often how people present for treatment when they have bipolar disorder is with the depressed mood, so it is important to assess for history of prior mania and also to ask about family history of mania,” Battle said.

    “Asking those kinds of questions to help clarify whether this is unipolar depression vs. bipolar is going to be important to guide treatment.”

    Even then, the answer is not easy.

    Among women in the study not diagnosed with BD, 75 percent self-reported symptoms of irritability and 24.5 percent reported symptoms of elation.

    Upon diagnosis, Battle said, the next question is “How can we best support women in making reasonable treatment decisions when faced with bipolar disorder during pregnancy?”

    One option could be guiding patients to switch to medications that are safer during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so that they don’t go off medications altogether. Connecting them to effective psychosocial therapies is also important.

    Battle said she is part of a team working to develop a specialized psychosocial intervention for perinatal women with bipolar disorder.

Finding a home in DC, she was thrilled to be tapped by Chef Fabio Trabocchi as part of the opening team at Fiola. When the hustle and bustle of the city becomes too much, she often makes time for trips back to Pennsylvania to enjoy the quiet, peaceful way of life.

    A native of Hampton Roads Virginia, John s love of restaurants began at a young age, touring his grandmother’s chic French restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. From then on a passion for food and wine developed into his first job at the Trellis Restaurant in Williamsburg, Virginia. After high school he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend Johnson and Wales University. During school and after graduation he worked for two restaurant groups and opened five restaurants. He also worked as a consultant on of independent restaurants. John was a member of the opening team of BLT for Laurent Tourondel in the new Ritz Carlton Hotel in Charlotte.

    John moved to Washington DC in 2010 to work at Bourbon Steak in the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown. Working with the Michael Mina group, the restaurant gained numerous awards and national recognition including the award of Best Fine Dining Washington DC. John is grateful to be a part of a growing restaurant group.

    In 2004, Casper Rice moved from Chicago to San Francisco to further explore the food and wine industry. At Rubicon Restaurant, he received initial lessons from Master Sommelier Larry Stone. Upon Stone s retirement from the restaurant, Rice decided to join the team at Restaurant Michael Mina in the Westin St. Francis. For three years he worked with the group under the guidance of Wine Director Rajat Parr. In 2008, after spending a growing season in the Loire Valley and a harvesting season in Burgundy with Nicolas Potel, Casper returned to San Francisco to open Rajat Parr s Burgundy focused restaurant RN74. After nearly seven years exploring the world of wine, Casper drove the bar programs for Michelin-starred Alexander s Steakhouse, with focus at the San Francisco location. Using a background in wine as a backdrop to understanding flavor balance, Casper created ‘farm-to-table house-made bitters, tinctures, and syrups to produce classic and modern cocktails that would play yin to the yang of Chef Marc Zimmerman s Japanese-influenced gastronomic creations. After two and a half years of bar programming, Casper was recruited to Virginia by The Inn at Little Washington. Co-authoring a Grand Award winning wine list was a great experience while also running the floor as a sommelier and organizing the cellar of around 18,000 bottles. After a year and a half in the Virginia countryside, Casper has found a new home in Washington, D.C.

    Magda Gilpin. Sommelier

    Magda moved to Washington, D.C. from Poland several years ago to pursue her diplomatic career and work on developing trade relations between her home country and the United States. After several business trips to California and spending time in Napa Valley, she fell in love with wine. She moved to California and attended intensive sommelier training where she studied wine and wine service from three great Master Sommeliers, passed the Court of Master Sommeliers exam, and then worked in the San Francisco wine sales industry. Now at Fiola, Magda loves to discuss wine with guests, help them choose perfect pairings to match the kitchen’s amazing culinary creations, and work on Fiola s inspiring wine list to continue making it the best it can be.

    Sarah began her hospitality career with the Max Restaurant Group in Connecticut. While studying economics at Trinity College in Hartford, she held various front of the house positions and developed a passion for hospitality. After college she continued her career with the Max Restaurant Group and was promoted to the position of manager. In this position she had the opportunity to work in several restaurants, all with different concepts; including market fresh and sustainable seafood, casual Italian bistros and creative burgers.Sarah relocated to Washington, DC and joined the Fiola team first as a server, and then as a manager and sommelier at Casa Luca. She is delighted to take her hospitality career to the next level as our Fiola Private Events Manager.
