Top 5 Green Business Ideas for Aspiring Eco-entrepreneurs

Green businesses are gaining popularity as more opportunities arise for eco-entrepreneurs to invest in. This business is mainly driven by the demand of consumers who are interested in purchasing goods and services that incorporate eco-friendly manufacturing processes. In fact, most of the services and products being offered today have been greened. Thus, if you are looking to start a business that is geared towards saving water, energy and other resources, you simply cannot run short of sustainable ideas.

There are numerous green business options that you can venture into on a part-time basis and with a small investment. Whether you are interested in a part-time or a full-time green business, here are top 5 ideas that eco-entrepreneurs can invest in and join the green business revolution:

1. Green App Development

If your preference is working in the technology world, you can still make a contribution to the green revolution through the development of apps that promote a green living ideology through proper waste management and recycling. Generally, apps that offer information on what to buy and how to recycle waste are quite popular.

Green app development is quite promising in terms of income generation as its potential is not about to exhaust in the near future. Besides, existing businesses can also consider developing apps that are branded, as there is room for winning more customers for your products and services as well as cementing their loyalty.

2. Waste Management/Recycling Business

Recycling is a great step towards ensuring that toxic waste does not end up in the landfills. An electronics recycling business is a great area as old computers, mobile phones, fax machines as well as outdated television sets can be used to produce items that can be used elsewhere. You can also consider offering a pickup service for such electronics and deliver them to recyclers at a fee even though you may not offer actual recycling services.

3. Manufacturing of Green Products

This is another leading business idea that has continued to top the list of green business ideas. You may want to consider manufacturing vegan, organic or herbal soaps, lotions, shampoos as well as other cosmetics whose demand has continued to grow. One of the reasons why these products are preferred is because they have few or no side effects as opposed to chemical-based personal care products. Thus, you can manufacture different kinds of safe and natural personal care products and then market and sell them locally.

4. Green Consulting

Setting up a green consultancy is another good green business idea. This is because more and more businesses as well as individuals are looking to go green even though they do not have adequate knowledge on where to begin. Thus, as a consultant you can develop a concrete action plan for them after looking at their environment and making an analysis of the environmental weaknesses and strengths.

Homes and businesses that are consuming more energy than they need for cooling or heating can benefit from green advice. In addition to consulting, you can also consider adding a green event management service where you will see to it that every area of the event is executed in a manner that is environmentally friendly.

5. Energy Efficiency Auditor

Being able to determine the amount of energy you use at home and sticking to it is a great step in ensuring energy efficiency. Unfortunately, not so many people understand the value of this. This is why you will do really well if you set up an auditing agency that oversees that business owners are determining how much insulation they need, know when the bulbs are due for a change as well as the kind of programmable thermostats they need.

There are endless opportunities when it comes to green business ideas so you need to identify the area that you are passionate about. Also make sure that you are well skilled in your chosen area before setting up your recycling business if you want to make the difference you desire.

Erich Lawson is passionate about saving environment by effective recycling. He has written a wide array of articles on how modern recycling equipments can be used by industries to reduce monthly garbage bills and increase recycling revenue. Green Business Ideas for Entrepreneurs

Updated August 11, 2016

What is a Green Business and what are the advantages of starting one?

A “green” business strives to have a positive impact on the environment and community. It develops and practices business strategies that go beyond regulation and demonstrate commitment to a healthy and sustainable future (earthshare.org ). German-based Roland Berger Strategy Consultants estimates that the global market volume for environmental technologies will reach a projected $2,740 billion by 2020.

As someone thinking of starting a small business. a green business has two advantages over other kinds of businesses. First, environmentalism is growing rapidly so you will be targeting a growing market. Second, starting a green business can be particularly satisfying as you get to make your own contribution to making the world a better place.

Here are what I think are the best green business ideas for entrepreneurs .

1) Help them grow it.
Gardens for Small Spaces

The growing concern about where our food comes from and what s been done to it is translating into increasing numbers of people who want to grow their own food, wherever they live.

One green business idea is to produce garden-paks , small collections of seeded plant trays that would fit on the smallest balcony and allow people to grow their own vegetables.

On a larger scale, as a garden designer you could specialize in rooftop garden installations.

Or you could develop a green business focusing on products that will help people grow their own food, such as greenhouses suitable for residential homes or ecological pest controls. Growing food is one trend that’s only going to. um. get bigger (excuse the pun).

Worm farming and organic compost sales are other green gardening business ideas that might work for you.

2) Help them cut energy costs.
Solar Power Generation and Solar Water Heating Systems

I think it s a safe bet that the cost of traditional energy going to go up – making green business ideas related to saving energy and cutting energy costs also a safe bet.

Solar water heating systems can provide significant energy cost savings (providing up to 70% of a family s hot water when properly installed, according to some distributors).

Between 2008 and 2011 solar panel (photovoltaic) electrical generation had an annual growth rate of 147%, helped by rebates and subsidies that vary from province to province. The installation of rooftop solar panels and the tie in to household/commercial electrical systems requires a lot of expertise and businesses that provide this service are flourishing.

If either of these green business ideas appeals to you see Natural Resources Canada s Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic Energy information sites.

3) Help them clean it.
Eco-friendly Cleaning Products

From laundry through vehicles, things have to be cleaned.

But people are a lot more sensitive to what s being poured down the drain and want to be able to get the sparkle without the environmental strain. One green business idea to help them accomplish this is to sell environmentally friendly cleaning products. This is another green business idea that could work well as an ecommerce site. (See 8 Easy Ways to Get Your Small Business Into Ecommerce ).

Going green is also a great marketing strategy for a cleaning business. Commercial and residential cleaning businesses are still hot business ideas as the demand for cleaning services is still growing. Using only eco-friendly cleaning products in your cleaning business could give you a competitive edge.

Note: Also watch for the commercialization of virtually waterless cleaning. Researchers at the University of Leeds have developed a new way of cleaning clothes using less than 2% of the water and energy of a conventional washing machine.

4) Help them find it locally.
Local Eco-alternatives

Books like the 100-Mile Diet have inspired many people to think carefully about where their food is grown and the negative environmental effects of consuming products that may be shipped from thousands of miles away.

People want local eco-friendly alternatives to the products they ve been using. To service this need farm markets have been proliferating in North America, selling everything from locally raised beef, pork or poultry to locally made soaps and cleaning materials. Talk to your local farm market association or butcher store about selling your product locally. (And of course you should read How to Make a Bundle at the Farmers Market before you set up your stall.)

5) Show them what needs to be done.
Green Consulting

As the price of energy goes up and being green becomes increasingly popular, more individuals and businesses want to become greener but don t know what the best course of action is. So green consulting is a business idea whose time has come.

Green consultants put together an action plan for their clients by examining their client s environment and analyzing their environmental strengths and weaknesses. For instance, a home or business may be using a lot more energy than necessary for heating or cooling because of a lack of weather-stripping, insulation, or improperly installed HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems.

Some green consulting businesses also offer event management. The green business idea is that the consulting company will see to it that every aspect of the event, from advertising through waste management, is handled in the most environmentally friendly way.

6) Help them get there.
Scooters and Bikes

Transportation is another venue of change for many people, whose need to go green is strengthened by increasingly high prices at the pump. Scooters and bikes are a very appealing all-in-one solution; as a scooter or bike rider you get to save money, be environmentally friendly, and, if you get the kind of bike that needs pedaling, improve your health, too!

I have to admit that s not the kind that appeals to me; my favourites are the Vespa and the three-wheeled Piaggio MP3. Becoming a dealer might be the business idea you ve been looking for.

All kinds of electric and gas scooters and electric bikes are going to increase in popularity though. Daymak Canada has a good range of green vehicles, including mopeds, scooters and electric bikes and offers franchises.

If you live in an urban area, renting out bikes and scooters might be a profitable green business.

7) Help them build green.
Green Building

Green building is a trend rife with possibilities for starting new green businesses. Construction companies, architects, designers and contractors can specialize in green building. For instance, a contractor might become a LEED certified professional; a designer might focus on elements and materials that are the least environmentally destructive.

And green building calls for all kinds of green products that could become the foundation of your new small business, from water-saving toilets through salvaged wood (and solar water heating systems).

Learn more about LEED Canada (the environmental rating system used as a standard for new construction and major renovations) at the Canada Green Building Council website.

Green Businesses Deliver More Than Profits

Hopefully these green business ideas have got you excited about the possibilities. You may not get rich, and to be honest, you probably won t. But you will have the pleasure of running a business that helps people lead greener lives and combining what you do with what you believe in.

8 Green Small Business Ideas Opportunities

If you re looking for ways to earn some extra money, you might want to think about starting a green side business.

Not only is having a green business a great way to set yourself apart from your competition, but it also makes you more memorable in the minds of your potential customers.

So what exactly is a green business, you ask? Here are 8 examples you can start with right away.

Go Green Small Business Ideas

1. Get into Worm Farming

I m really into vermicomposting. If you are too, then you could start a side business selling your compost, and your worms, to gardeners and fisherman. Compost, especially organic compost, is really expensive to buy in home improvement stores. Your neighborhood gardeners would love to pay a cheaper price for your compost, though!

You could also hold classes and teach others how to get into vermicomposting.

2. Make Organic Soap

Making soap isn t as hard as a lot of people think. This is a side business I m thinking of starting myself this summer, and I ve already started researching on what I need to get it going.

The cool thing about homemade soap is that you can make it really unique. For example, you can make goat s milk soaps, organic soaps, herbal soaps, aromatherapy soaps the world is your oyster! You can sell your homemade soaps at farmers markets, crafts fairs, and online through marketplaces like Etsy and eBay .

3. Create Organic Gardens for Small Spaces

Thanks to the down economy, and an increasing concern about food safety and pesticide use, more and more people are getting into home gardening. But, it can be overwhelming, especially to those who have never started seeds from scratch or tried to pick out vegetables to grow.

You could build an awesome side business by doing all of this work for them. You could sell garden packs prepared for beginners, especially those who want to get into container gardening. If you have a green thumb and love planting, this would be a fun and rewarding side business to get into.

4. Become a Green Consultant

You ve probably heard time and time again that going green often means you save green. The savings can be significant, especially for businesses and corporations.

Green consultants are popping up everywhere. These consultants do a thorough evaluation of a home or business, and then put together a strategy to help people find ways to go green and save money.

For instance, you might discover a homeowner is losing a lot of energy because she doesn t have enough insulation in the attic and her weatherstripping is shot. You ll help purchase green energy technologies that help them save energy, start a recycling program. and be more efficient in general.

One way to get started is to check out Green Irene Eco Consultants. For $350, you get a full online training package, as well as plenty of support and materials to help you start your eco consulting business.

Some technical schools and adult education classes will also teach you how to be a green consultant. Or, you could also go the DIY route, and study on your own.

5. Make Soy or Beeswax Candles

Did you know that traditional candles often release harsh or even toxic chemicals into the air? Soy and beeswax candles are natural, especially when they re scented with essential oils. They also burn slower and purer than paraffin wax, and they don t leave any smoke residue on your walls or in your ventilation system.

If you love candles, then making soy or beeswax candles could be a fun way to earn some extra cash on the side. You can sell your candles online at Etsy or eBay, or at your local farmers market.

6. Start a Community Lending Library

Are you one of those people who have every tool ever invented? Or, do you have a movie collection to rival Netflix ?

If so, you could be earning money on the side by renting those items out. Small, community lending libraries are popping up all over the country. Some of them are free, but others are subscription services. Items are loaned out locally, usually within one neighborhood or a certain mile-radius.

Why is this a green business? Well, imagine you need a powerwasher for a day. Some people go out and buy one. But if you know you can rent your neighbor s powerwasher for cheap, then you ll do this instead of dropping $100 or more on your own. Lending libraries help reduce consumption, as well as helping your friends and neighbors save money.

7. Get into Green Crafting

One of my most treasured possessions is a fabulous, elfin-like coat I got on Etsy. The coat is 100% handmade entirely from recycled sweaters. It s incredible.

Green crafting has huge appeal for people, and you can make an incredible living selling upcycled art, clothing, and jewelry. For instance, the woman I bought my coat from sells each one for $250-$400. She s had over 3,300 sales, just on Etsy. And her coats sell out within seconds after she puts them up.

Another artist I know takes brightly colored vintage Tupperware containers and turns them into amazing lamps and light fixtures. Another artist takes sea glass she finds on the shore and turns it into beautiful, minimalist jewelry.

There are tons of creative and unique ways to upcycle something old into something new. If you re lacking ideas, then surf Etsy to look for ideas, or head over to sites like Instructables or ReadyMade. both of which are full of ideas.

8. Goat Rentals

Think I m kidding here? I m not. If you have enough land to support a small herd of goats, you could be making some easy side money. Why would someone want to rent a goat?

Here s a personal story. My family s farm in Louisiana sits right up against a bayou that s thick with poison ivy, snakes, and mosquitoes. The dense brush also attracts plenty of deer and other wildlife, which attracts the local black bears. Because of the denseness of the trees, it s really hard to get in there to clear the brush out with the tractor.

So what s my dad going to do? Hire out a herd of goats to clean it up, of course.

Goats eat anything: poison ivy, bushes, brambles you name it. And they re amazing for clearing out places like the bayou, or steep slopes you can t get a mower down. All you have to do it set up a portable fencing and let them eat their way through the brush over several days. The best part is that unlike a tractor or lawn mower, goats don t harm the environment.

Final Word

There s no doubt that the green economy is only going to grow, especially as energy and gas prices rise further. Having a green side business means you re likely to stand out, and even be more appealing to potential customers.

Do you have any green ideas for a small business?

What useful apps do you have on your phone?

Just in case you have forgotten – phones are a productivity tool.

Firstly, you can make or receive phone calls.

I know that sounds obvious but I called 5 self employed business people on Wednesday (during work hours) and none of them answered their phone.

I know we all get busy and can’t be interupted, but what if I was a brand new customer calling?

Enter the Smartphone!

They are so smart they can literally save you hours of ‘after hours’ sweat.

You don’t have to ‘check your diary’ and get back to people like we used to. You can put your caller on speaker and look up your calendar on-the-run.

People used to write a cheque (remember cheques?) hoping there would be enough money in the account to cover it. Now you can be adding another appointment to your schedule or ordering your client dinner and check your account while the drinks come. You can even pay the bill by waving your phone over the magic machine.

What other apps can save you time (and give you back your evenings)?

Windows 10 problems 2015

[If you don’t understand any of this – you are probably better off than me]

Hi, let me shed some light, on Windows 10.

Windows 10, is a wonderful new bride – BUT.
I made the mistake of logging into Windows Live (as encouraged) .
Like the IOS system (Apple) and Google, it welcomes you into the family in exchange for your precious email address.

Aahh, now feeling all warm and fuzzy, you download wonderful apps from their app store.
BUT (I told you to expect a ‘but’) now all my documents think I have’ been unfaithful’ and open as ‘read only ‘.
My account keeping software has divorced me, as I have (apparently) lost all my read/write privileges .

(Where am I to go for my conjugal rights now?)
I have been to relationship counselling in the wise forums of the internet and found them wanting.

Alas, I have had to hijack my own identity and become a new user (don’t you hate to be called a USER) on my own PC!
I have raped and pillaged my former self, stripping him of every useful file.
Then, on bended knee I have begged for another chance with my old ‘cloud’ services and email client.
They didn’t suspect that it was really me under this fake name, as long as I paid the bride price, of the sacred password.

How do I search inside PDF’s?

Is the info you get

sometimes attached to an email

that last catalogue your supplier sent you;

an invoice you received for your online membership; or

maybe they are separate jobs that have progress notes you are making before you finally send the customer an invoice.

It may be a statement from your bank,

a form from your accountant or

an invoice from a supplier.

It could be a document with technical specifications for a piece of equipment you used in a job some time ago.

“I know I received that info; I need to refer to it again; I just can’t find it”

I hear your frustration.

You remember it contained the word ‘subclause’ in it.

So you go to your search box in your email (like Outlook) and type ‘subclause’ .

Your search result says “No matches found for ‘subclause’

You huff and puff because you know the document with that exact word in an attachment, is definitely in an email you received.

Why can’t you find it?

Why can’t you search the contents of PDF’s?

Lying to an insurer.

Malaysian Airlines MH370, t he search continues .

These testimonials are from those who receive Paul’s humorous report.

They are enjoying those ‘tiny bits of information’ and are now getting ‘more local work – without advertising’ .

Why not join them. Fill in this simple form below:

Thank you for your time, advice and knowledge today. And thanks for lunch too! I have now made the final payment installment. It’s always great to work with you and I am very appreciative.

You make me not just a better businessman but a better person overall. I now have many things to ponder. Thanks for helping me on my life journey.

I just wanted to say that I’m usually busy in my business and my inbox gets lots of ‘newsletters’ from people. I don’t have time to read them – I usually delete them.

But your reports are different.I was sceptical at first, but they put a smile on my face (we must have a similar sense of humour). I find myself stopping to read them, for two reasons:

1. You add a ‘human’ face to your reports; I identify with the stories you tell, to make your point, and 2. They always contain useful hints and tips I can use in my business.

I appreciate your generosity with your ideas.
If you are considering subscribing to Paul’s reports, Please don’t hesitate, just do it – it’ll put a smile on your face and dollars in your bank.

#writing business plan

The market analysis section of your business plan should illustrate your industry and market knowledge as well as any of your research findings and conclusions. This section is usually presented after the company description .

What to Include in Your Market Analysis

Industry Description and Outlook – Describe your industry, including its current size and historic growth rate as well as other trends and characteristics (e.g. life cycle stage, projected growth rate). Next, list the major customer groups within your industry.

Information About Your Target Market – Narrow your target market to a manageable size. Many businesses make the mistake of trying to appeal to too many target markets. Research and include the following information about your market:

Distinguishing characteristics – What are the critical needs of your potential customers? Are those needs being met? What are the demographics of the group and where are they located? Are there any seasonal or cyclical purchasing trends that may impact your business?

Size of the primary target market – In addition to the size of your market, what data can you include about the annual purchases your market makes in your industry? What is the forecasted market growth for this group? For more information, see our market research guide for tips and free government resources that can help you build a market profile.

How much market share can you gain? – What is the market share percentage and number of customers you expect to obtain in a defined geographic area? Explain the logic behind your calculation.

Pricing and gross margin targets – Define your pricing structure. gross margin levels, and any discount that you plan to use.

When you include information about any of the market tests or research studies you have completed, be sure to focus only on the results of these tests. Any other details should be included in the appendix.

Competitive Analysis – Your competitive analysis should identify your competition by product line or service and market segment. Assess the following characteristics of the competitive landscape:

  • Market share
  • Strengths and weaknesses
  • How important is your target market to your competitors?
  • Are there any barriers that may hinder you as you enter the market?
  • What is your window of opportunity to enter the market?
  • Are there any indirect or secondary competitors who may impact your success?

“I have a small, freelance writing business and sometimes projects string out and I have to track my time and eventually send the invoice. I can do all that with this program, plus it will send bulk emails and print all the unpaid invoices when I want them or show me reports for a fast business overview. It does everything I need it to and turns out a nice, professional product.”
