Franchising can not only strengthen the brand and reach of a company, but it can also act as a very good method of securing its future, but only if done well.

The first thing to understand is that franchising is not a tool to fix a bad business. It is not there to provide injections of income from other people to underpin a failing elsewhere. Franchising is a model used to replicate a successful and proven business. using the investment and skills of new individual business owners, who will be trained and supported to run the business under the agreement, conditions and format, as proven and agreed.

Franchising encompasses a multitude of business types and consumer markets and has well established itself as a respected and highly regarded business model.

To franchise a business is not something that can be done without thought. To start with, the business needs to be proven you need to show potential franchisees that the business works in the way in which they will need to run it. It also needs to be transferable, so that it can be run in multiple locations, using the same system, brand and quality. As a key point in this, the franchise also needs to be something that you can teach people to do. There is little point having a franchise that only one person in the world would be capable of running. You then need to make sure it is protected, by ensuring you have all the correct documents to secure your brand with any appropriate legal advice .

You love candles. You love them so much that you think you want to start a business making them. They are fun to make, it s true! And it s so lovely to have your house constantly be filled with those wonderful, delightful fragrances!

I myself, did not realize all the work that goes into a soy candle business, or any candle business for that matter, because you soon realize that it is not just about making the candles. I don t want to discourage you. No. Because a soy candle making business can be a nice profitable home business for you! But I want to make sure you realize all that goes into it, because if you are just starting out, or just thinking about starting, then you don t know all the work that goes into candle making and marketing and selling.

This is the reason I decided to close my business after 4 years. If I didn t have kids I may have stuck with it, but the fact that I have 3 boys (I only had 2 when I first started my soy candle business) and was working my business and trying to homeschool, and on top of that, living in a small home, I had to make a choice on what my priorities were and I decided I wasn t enjoying the whole candle business all that much anymore even though business kept growing, so I closed the doors. In fact it was because of the growing customers that I decided to call it quits. The more customers the more busy it got and I didn t have anyone to help me with it all!

That does not mean that you can t do it, and enjoy it though! Everyone is different and this business can work for you!

Below is a rundown of all the things involved with making, marketing, and selling soy candles. If you can outsource a few of these things, it will make your business so much less stressful and you can focus more on your candle making!

  • Making soy candles from scratch (melting wax, preparing containers, placing wicks, cooling time, thinking up new fragrances, testing, testing,testing, cleaning up your mess, cleaning your tools)
  • Ordering supplies
  • Putting on tags and warning labels and any other decorations
  • Packaging your soy candles (mainly votives, tarts and tealights)
  • Packaging for shipping
  • Printing shipping labels
  • Creating and maintaining a website
  • Answering questions
  • Marketing your business whether online or offline
  • Preparing for and traveling to craft shows
  • Did I mention maintaining your website.
  • Doing taxes
  • Thinking and thinking and thinking about this, that and everything to do with soy candles!

Now, like I said, if you can afford to pay someone to do some of those things above, or you have a partner to help, a good size kitchen(better yet a separate area to work), then you will probably have a much easier time of it!

I know I might have caused some doubt in your mind of whether you want to even try this business, but really, you won t know until you try. I loved it the first 2 years, it s just that I had so many other things I was trying to do too, so the candle business just didn t end up fitting with the lifestyle I wanted.

But I hope I ve made you seriously consider some things and if you think you want to give it a go, then go for it! Procrastinating will get you nowhere, and, like I said, you won t know until you try!

Yes, marketing a new business or product can be a time consuming, costly endeavor — something many entrepreneurs don t have.

Small businesses and startups generally don t have the luxury of outsourcing their marketing needs to professionals. However, there are a handful of marketing practices available to entrepreneurs that don t require them to burn through valuable resources to get this challenge under foot and get their business humming.

As the co-founder and CEO of a media technology startup. I ve learned a few helpful secrets on how to market your business for free.

1. Create local awareness.

Gaining coverage in local papers, trade magazines and websites can greatly increase name recognition and educate people about your business – driving new customer acquisition. While many growing businesses in competitive landscapes may want to hire an expensive public relations firm, startups and small businesses can start off with some simple do-it-yourself PR.

Start by researching publications and writers that cover your industry — or local business. Once you have a grasp on the writers you want to reach and the stories they typically write for their publication, craft a pitch around your business that will pique their interest.

Decide what type of candle you would like to make. When you’re first starting out, it’s best to stick with one or two products. In candles, making container candles is probably the simplest, but you can also make mold candles or taper candles. [1]

Pick a wax to work with. Waxes come in several main groups. Which group you choose is mostly based on preference.

  • One group is paraffin, which is a by-product of petroleum. You can find it in a variety of melting points, depending on what type of candles you are making. For instance, you need a higher melting point for tapers than you do for container candles. [2]
  • Another type of wax is beeswax. Beeswax is a product that bees make, so it has a natural, light honey smell. Some people prefer this wax because it is all-natural, though others will mix beeswax with other waxes for their candles. [3]
  • A third category of waxes is vegetable waxes, where soy is probably the most popular. One benefit of soy wax is it is pure white, and it also doesn’t shrink up when you pour it, which means you don’t have to pour wax more than once. Bayberry wax is also in this category. [4]

Learn the technique. One of the simplest ways to learn how to make candles is to take a class in your community. You may be able to find one with your local parks and recreation department or even at your local community college. However, you can also find a wide variety of tutorials online.
