Franchising your business

Business format franchising is the granting of a licence by one person (the franchisor) to another (the franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to trade as their own business under the brand of the franchisor, following a proven business model. The franchisee also receives a package, comprising all the elements necessary to establish a previously untrained person in the business and to run it with continual assistance on a predetermined basis (including a predetermined agreement length with renewal options).

Franchising can not only strengthen the brand and reach of a company, but it can also act as a very good method of securing its future, but only if done well.

The first thing to understand is that franchising is not a tool to fix a bad business. It is not there to provide injections of income from other people to underpin a failing elsewhere. Franchising is a model used to replicate a successful and proven business. using the investment and skills of new individual business owners, who will be trained and supported to run the business under the agreement, conditions and format, as proven and agreed.

Franchising encompasses a multitude of business types and consumer markets and has well established itself as a respected and highly regarded business model.

To franchise a business is not something that can be done without thought. To start with, the business needs to be proven you need to show potential franchisees that the business works in the way in which they will need to run it. It also needs to be transferable, so that it can be run in multiple locations, using the same system, brand and quality. As a key point in this, the franchise also needs to be something that you can teach people to do. There is little point having a franchise that only one person in the world would be capable of running. You then need to make sure it is protected, by ensuring you have all the correct documents to secure your brand with any appropriate legal advice .

The links on the left-hand side of this page will give you a clear overview of what’s involved in franchising your business, and a solid understanding of the steps and processes you’ll need to go through.

A Soy Candle Making Business is Not Easy

Psssst My Facebook Business Page E-Course is 60% all through August!

Want to get your candle business out there on social media and grow your following? FB is an excellent, and free place to start!

You love candles. You love them so much that you think you want to start a business making them. They are fun to make, it s true! And it s so lovely to have your house constantly be filled with those wonderful, delightful fragrances!

I myself, did not realize all the work that goes into a soy candle business, or any candle business for that matter, because you soon realize that it is not just about making the candles. I don t want to discourage you. No. Because a soy candle making business can be a nice profitable home business for you! But I want to make sure you realize all that goes into it, because if you are just starting out, or just thinking about starting, then you don t know all the work that goes into candle making and marketing and selling.

This is the reason I decided to close my business after 4 years. If I didn t have kids I may have stuck with it, but the fact that I have 3 boys (I only had 2 when I first started my soy candle business) and was working my business and trying to homeschool, and on top of that, living in a small home, I had to make a choice on what my priorities were and I decided I wasn t enjoying the whole candle business all that much anymore even though business kept growing, so I closed the doors. In fact it was because of the growing customers that I decided to call it quits. The more customers the more busy it got and I didn t have anyone to help me with it all!

That does not mean that you can t do it, and enjoy it though! Everyone is different and this business can work for you!

Below is a rundown of all the things involved with making, marketing, and selling soy candles. If you can outsource a few of these things, it will make your business so much less stressful and you can focus more on your candle making!

  • Making soy candles from scratch (melting wax, preparing containers, placing wicks, cooling time, thinking up new fragrances, testing, testing, testing, cleaning up your mess, cleaning your tools)
  • Ordering supplies
  • Putting on tags and warning labels and any other decorations
  • Packaging your soy candles (mainly votives, tarts and tealights)
  • Packaging for shipping
  • Printing shipping labels
  • Creating and maintaining a website
  • Answering questions
  • Marketing your business whether online or offline
  • Preparing for and traveling to craft shows
  • Did I mention maintaining your website.
  • Doing taxes
  • Thinking and thinking and thinking about this, that and everything to do with soy candles!

Now, like I said, if you can afford to pay someone to do some of those things above, or you have a partner to help, a good size kitchen(better yet a separate area to work), then you will probably have a much easier time of it!

I know I might have caused some doubt in your mind of whether you want to even try this business, but really, you won t know until you try. I loved it the first 2 years, it s just that I had so many other things I was trying to do too, so the candle business just didn t end up fitting with the lifestyle I wanted.

But I hope I ve made you seriously consider some things and if you think you want to give it a go, then go for it! Procrastinating will get you nowhere, and, like I said, you won t know until you try!

Until next time,

What if you had a tool that could help you get started making soy candles for your business right now?

Would you like to save a ton of time that you could be using to work on starting your business instead of searching all over trying to find how to make this kind of soy candle, or that kind, or how to find the best wick, what supplier to use and so on, etc etc ?

That is exactly why I created my new eBook The Soy Candle Making Book You can download the book and have everything you need to make amazing soy candles that your customers will love!

No need to go searching around the net for every piece of information because it s all right here!

4 Ways to Market Your Business for Free

CEO and Founder of Tack

Ask any entrepreneur that s just starting out what the most difficult aspect of their business is and they ll likely point you to the challenge of reaching and retaining customers. Yes, marketing a new business or product can be a time consuming, costly endeavor — something many entrepreneurs don t have.

Small businesses and startups generally don t have the luxury of outsourcing their marketing needs to professionals. However, there are a handful of marketing practices available to entrepreneurs that don t require them to burn through valuable resources to get this challenge under foot and get their business humming.

As the co-founder and CEO of a media technology startup. I ve learned a few helpful secrets on how to market your business for free.

1. Create local awareness.

Gaining coverage in local papers, trade magazines and websites can greatly increase name recognition and educate people about your business – driving new customer acquisition. While many growing businesses in competitive landscapes may want to hire an expensive public relations firm, startups and small businesses can start off with some simple do-it-yourself PR.

Start by researching publications and writers that cover your industry — or local business. Once you have a grasp on the writers you want to reach and the stories they typically write for their publication, craft a pitch around your business that will pique their interest.

For example, if you re in the widget business, explain how your widget business is impacting the local economy — or your industry. Entrepreneurs and small business owners can also subscribe to Help a Reporter Out. This free service provides queries for upcoming articles — allowing you to contact the writer directly.

2. Increase lead generation and customer engagement with email marketing.

According to a recent survey conducted by Ascend2. email is the most effective digital marketing tactic, the one that delivers the best ROI and the least difficult to execute. Start a customer newsletter that offers timely information about the business, special promotions or an inside look at the company. This helps build a community with your customers, and it keeps your product and business on their minds.

Entrepreneurs don t need to pay an agency or marketing consultant to develop an email campaign either. You can do it yourself with free services, such as MailChimp. which allows small-business owners to send marketing emails, automated messages and targeted campaigns to customers. If you want to get more personal and send one-on-one messages, use a new free product called Sidekick that automatically notifies you when someone opens an email you sent them.

3. Leverage social media.

It s free, easy to get started and offers a massive network of potential customers. The hard part is increasing your followers without wasting your precious time. Make sure you focus on value over volume. Identify the social channels that reach your customers best including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn and the new guy, Ello.

The goal is to provide your followers with something that s useful, interesting and shareable. Start small, post a few times a week and learn who your audience is. Once you have an understanding of who s consuming your content, and what they re interested in, you can start ramping up efforts.

Also, tools like my company, Tack. allows you to take a post you ve already created and turn it into an online ad outside of the social network — increasing your post s reach.

4. Stand on the shoulders of your customers.

Satisfied clients can be a business s best marketing tool. Actively engage pre-existing clients through PR, social media and email.

For example, pitching your business and a satisfied customer to a writer can be mutually beneficial for both parties. This tactic generally leads to a more compelling story and a stronger relationship between you and your customer. Once you have a customer army of spokespeople, let them share positive experiences and tell your company story for you.

Marketing a small or new business is extremely crucial to a company s success but that doesn t necessarily mean you have to invest a huge chunk of capital into it. Savvy, frugal entrepreneurs can find products and services that can help increase visibility and drive customer acquisition without spending any overhead.

Ivey in the Rankings

Many media organizations publish some sort of package which rank business schools against each other. Most rankings measure schools on multiple dimensions with different weightings assigned to different elements.

There are some rankings dimensions that align with Ivey’s program strategies, which center on student and recruiter satisfaction, and others that do not. On the measures that align with our strategy, we perform well and where we do not, we pay close attention and review the data to determine if there is opportunity to improve. However, we do not formulate strategy based on their results.

From the Dean

“Choosing the right business school for you is not an easy decision and rankings don’t always make the decision easier. As a consumer you should become familiar with ranking methodology and the dimensions each one focuses on. Beyond rankings it’s important to consider whether a business school is a good fit for you. Prospective students should take into account everything from classroom experience, to meeting career goals and strength of alumni networks when going through the selection process.”

– Bob Kennedy, Dean, Ivey Business School

How to Start a Candle Making Business

Decide what type of candle you would like to make. When you’re first starting out, it’s best to stick with one or two products. In candles, making container candles is probably the simplest, but you can also make mold candles or taper candles. [1]

Can you please put wikiHow on the whitelist for your ad blocker? wikiHow relies on ad money to give you our free how-to guides. Learn how .

Pick a wax to work with. Waxes come in several main groups. Which group you choose is mostly based on preference.

  • One group is paraffin, which is a by-product of petroleum. You can find it in a variety of melting points, depending on what type of candles you are making. For instance, you need a higher melting point for tapers than you do for container candles. [2]
  • Another type of wax is beeswax. Beeswax is a product that bees make, so it has a natural, light honey smell. Some people prefer this wax because it is all-natural, though others will mix beeswax with other waxes for their candles. [3]
  • A third category of waxes is vegetable waxes, where soy is probably the most popular. One benefit of soy wax is it is pure white, and it also doesn’t shrink up when you pour it, which means you don’t have to pour wax more than once. Bayberry wax is also in this category. [4]

Learn the technique. One of the simplest ways to learn how to make candles is to take a class in your community. You may be able to find one with your local parks and recreation department or even at your local community college. However, you can also find a wide variety of tutorials online. In fact, you’ll likely be able to find all you need to know online if that is your preference. [5]

  • You can also check out books from your local library about candle-making.

Practice the technique. Before you start selling, you need to take time to build up your skill. Try working a little bit each day on your business, starting with practicing a bit each day.
